SPORT Prevention Plus Wellness to be Implemented to Area Youth

SPORT is the only evidence-based program in the country that uses a wellness model to prevent alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and other drug use while promoting healthy behaviors and positive images among youth ages 8 to 18.

SPORT Prevention Plus Wellness is designed to increase:

  • Sports and physical activities
  • Healthy eating
  • Getting adequate sleep
  • Controlling stress
  • Setting multiple health goals
  • Positive self-images

SPORT has also been shown to delay or reduce:

  • Alcohol use
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Marijuana use
  • Substance abuse problems

SPORT is a practical, single-lesson program customized to the current health habits of each youth.  SPORT can be easily implemented in any setting using a one-on-one or group script with PowerPoint slides.  Optional follow up materials include four parent-youth flyers, and both parent and youth web-based resources addressing each of the targeted health behaviors.

SPORT is implemented in four simple steps: 1) Screen youth for their current health habits, 2) Provide tailored feedback and positive image messages, 3) Help youth set and monitor multiple health behavior improvement goals, and 4) Follow up with youth in the future.

The majority of youth in America experience multiple, co-existing health risks and problems, such as physical inactivity, unhealthy eating, lack of sleep and/or substance use,” stated Dr. Chudley Werch, PhD, President at Prevention Plus Wellness, LLC.  “SPORT cost-effectively addresses the epidemic of youth health risks by teaching young people to link avoiding substance use with increasing wellness behaviors and images like participating in physical activities and sports, and eating healthy.”

SPORT’s positive, “whole health” focus has been shown to increase youth, parent and provider participation.  All-inclusive program materials allow SPORT to be implemented to an unlimited number of youth.  In addition, one-time program purchase eliminates future materials purchases and increases sustainability of the program.

Implemented in 47 states in the US and abroad, SPORT is being provided by prevention, health and education specialists to youth in schools, youth organizations, summer camps, sports and recreation leagues, hospitals and clinics, juvenile justice settings, substance abuse and mental health agencies, and faith-based organizations.
