Youth Leadership Training in Prevention
Funded by a California Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) grant, teams of high school juniors and seniors from Chico Unified School District (CUSD) have been recruited each fall to participate in the Youth Leadership Training Workshop hosted by Prevention Plus Wellness, LLC.
The goal of Certified Youth Leadership Training in Prevention Plus Wellness is for youth to gain leadership and service skills as personal coaches and/or classroom teachers implementing evidence-based programs to their peers.
For the past two years, upper class CUSD High School youth leaders have been trained as classroom instructors to provide the evidence-based SPORT Prevention Plus Wellness program to their younger 9th grade peers in health classes each semester.
According to Ann Brodsky, Coordinator of TUPE at Chico Unified School District:
“SPORT Prevention Plus Wellness (PPW) has been well received by the trained student leaders, teaching staff and administration, and by the students receiving the program. Data has indicated positive outcomes related to students’ willingness to engage in healthier behaviors following participating in SPORT PPW. Further, engaging upper classmen to teach the younger grades has provided positive role modeling and credibility to this important wellness program.”
