Best Practices Reminders for Implementing PPW Programs with Fidelity

Below are quick reminders on how to implement your Prevention Plus Wellness (PPW) program with fidelity.

Pre-Implementation

1.   Get Trained. The easiest way to do this is to complete an Online Self-Paced Prevention Plus Wellness (PPW) Program Implementer Training Course. These take just 1-2 hours to complete and come with a 3-year certification. You don’t need to take a training course for every age-variation of your program (e.g., high school, middle school, elementary school), but you do need to complete at least one course to gain the knowledge, confidence and skills to administer your program with fidelity and maximum efficacy.

2.   Practice. Practice your group or individual script, depending upon which one you’ll be implementing.  Practice either aloud by yourself or with someone else. We recommend you practice providing the entire script and goal plan a minimum of three times or until you feel comfortable and confident implementing it to youth.

3.   Tailor as Needed.  If you need to switch out some of the program slide images to better represent your group’s demographics or the healthy behaviors they practice locally, now is the time to do so.  Don’t forget you can also co-brand the cover slide by adding your organization’s logo and colors.

Implementation

1.   Follow the Script.  Remember to follow the script and goal plan directions, but don’t feel you need to read them word for word.  Use your own communication and presentation styles.

2.   Collect Surveys.  It’s essential to administer the pretest before starting your lesson and the posttest immediately after the lesson to assess and track program effects on risk and protective factors associated with substance use and healthy behaviors. It’s also important to complete an Instructor’s Survey every time you present a PPW program lesson to measure implementation quality.  Request online survey links from PPW before implementing your program.

Post-Implementation

1.   Collect Follow Up Posttests. Administer the follow up posttest at the end of the semester. This is critical for assessing program effects on actual health habits beyond the lesson.

2.   Follow Up & Reimplement. Don’t forget to remind students to continue to set weekly goals to avoid substance use and increase their healthy behaviors.  Use our free Health Behavior Goal Tracking Chart and the BetterChoice Digital Wellness Goal Tracker to strengthen youth self-regulation skills and self-efficacy. You should also re-implement your PPW program to youth at least annually to reinforce healthy behavior motivation and goal setting skills.
