SPORT & InShape PPW Programs Linked to Multiple Drug Reductions

The Prevention Research and Community Education (PCRE) team at the University of Missouri St. Louis-Missouri Institute of Mental Health (MIMH) began implementing the SPORT and InShape Prevention Plus Wellness (PPW) curricula in June 2023.

They selected PPW after determining that briefer interventions were needed to better meet the needs of our participants, families, and partnering community organizations.

This brief report presents outcomes from two recently funded federal grants, one of which is still ongoing.

The intervention consisted of the one-session SPORT for most participants (333) or InShape (34) followed by a one-hour PowerPoint describing specific drugs and their effects.

The data are based on surveys administered to participants at baseline, program exit, and one-month post-exit follow-up.

Fewer participants reported engaging in substance use behaviors at 1-month follow-up compared to baseline. Marijuana, electronic vaping, alcohol, and tobacco are the top 4 most used substances among participants.

A high percentage of participants also reported revisiting, following, and benefiting from their wellness goal plan, which is an integral component of PPW programs.
