The national Youth Risk Behavior Survey shows that approximately three out of every four adolescents in America are not getting the minimum required physical activity, sleep or eating breakfast every day: https://www.cdc.gov/yrbs/index.html
These health behaviors, along with uncontrolled daily stress, are associated with greater substance use/misuse and poorer mental and physical wellbeing.
That’s why Prevention Plus Wellness (PPW) integrates substance use prevention with healthy lifestyle behavior promotion within single multi-health programs.
The evidence-based PPW Model is a simple 3-step process for cost-effectively enhancing the “whole health” of youth and young adults by integrating prevention and wellness.
These steps include:
Step #1: Screen Youth for Current Health Behaviors: Screening increases behavioral awareness and reflection on both healthy and substance use habits.
Step #2: Present a 45-minute Lesson Integrating Wellness & Drugs: The lesson provides feedback integrating and motivating behavior change to avoid and reduce substance use while promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors lacking among most US youths, including physical activity, eating breakfast and other healthy foods, sleep and stress control.
Step #3: Assist Youth in Setting Goals to Avoid Drugs & Increase Healthy Habits: The goal setting process initiates multiple behavior change and increases self-regulation skills and self-efficacy lacking among most youths.
