A new study published in Children and Youth Services Review (2024) found low-risk perceptions of cannabis, cigarette smoking, and alcohol use were identified as pathways to poor mental health and current cannabis use among adolescents.

These results suggest to us that prevention and intervention programs should address individual substance use risks to harming health and health behaviors that can promote mental wellbeing, performance, and happiness.

These healthy behaviors include physical activity and sports participation, eating regular breakfast and healthy foods, and getting adequate sleep which promote mental health and desired future images of youth as healthy, active, successful, and happy individuals.
