SPORT Prevention Plus Wellness Associated with Multiple Health Behaviors Among Elementary School Children

The one-lesson SPORT Prevention Plus Wellness (PPW) program was implemented to 359 elementary school youth (51% male, 68% 4th grade) in New York state school settings. 

Of the children who received the SPORT PPW program, the following percentage said they will engage in these healthy behaviors in the next month:    

97% will play sports or get physical activity on most days

88% will get 8 or more hours of sleep on most nights

94% will eat fruits and vegetables each day

91% will eat breakfast each morning

71% will talk with their parents about their health habits

91% will set goals to improve their health habits 

In addition, the following percentage of children said they will NOT try these substances when they are adults: 

72% will not try alcohol

96% will not puff on a cigarette

96% will not try drugs like marijuana

94% will not try an e-cigarette 

The SPORT Prevention Plus Wellness program addresses multiple health behaviors among elementary school children, including promoting physical activity, healthy eating, sleep while preventing future substance use.
