Results from a new study support the potential protective effects of implementing a strict home rule for e-cigarette use.
Research published in the journal Preventive Medicine (2022) involved a secondary analysis of the restricted-use data of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study to examine the longitudinal association between home rules for e-cigarette use and youth's vulnerability including initiation of use and regular use two years later.
The results show that having a strict home rule for e-cigarette use was associated with youth's heightened level of perceived injunctive norms, higher expectancy of harmfulness and lower odds for regular e-cigarette use.
The authors concluded that the findings of this study support the potential protective effects of implementing a strict home rule for e-cigarette use.
Based on this study, interventions like the Parent Vaping Prevention Plus Wellness (PPW) Training Program which teaches parents and caregivers to provide youth with brief anti-vaping messages and goal setting to avoid e-cigarette use while increasing healthy behaviors may be a particularly effective strategy for reducing youth e-cigarette use risk factors and consumption.
